Whyalla Steel Mill Effluent Treatment

Since 1964, BHP Steel has been operating its Long Products Division in Whyalla, Australia. In 1993 a Kickuth Engineered Wetland was installed to treat organic matter and ammonia in the plant effluent before being discharged into the Spencer Gulf. This system provided a significant recovery of fresh water, a very valuable resource in the area.

The system provided capital cost savings compared to mechanical systems along with significant operational savings. The wetland system has been operating successfully since it was commissioned.
