Othfresen, Germany

The Municipality of Othfresen, Germany constructed a Kickuth Engineered Wetland system in 1974 to treat the municipal sewage generated in the town. This project also included the restoration and preservation of an adjacent natural wetland for a bird sanctuary.

In 1984, the project was upgraded to handle additional wastewater from a sausage factory in the town.

Overall this system treats a population equivalent of 5,100.
