Central Newfoundland Landfill Leachate Treatment – Under Construction

The MMSB is currently closing the numerous small landfills around Newfoundland and replacing them with much larger "super landfills". The Central Newfoundland Waste Management Authority through SNC Lavalin has contracted Abydoz for the leachate treatment, specifically the ammonia reduction for the landfill in Norris Arm, Newfoundland. This system is currently under construction, to be completed in the fall of 2011.

Three smaller wetlands were also constructed on-site to treat the sewage from the administration building, the scale shop, and the maintenance shop.

Design

  • Average Flow: 52 m3/day
  • Wetland Treatment Area: 4,000 m2

Inlet Concentration:

Various parameters with fluctuations based on rainfall and interaction with open cell area in landfill.

Outlet Concentration:

Based on provincial regulations for various parameters

Process Description

Leachate is collected from the landfill and fed to lagoons for the removal of Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). The wastewater is then fed to a vertical-flow engineered wetland bed to provide primary treatment. A small aerated lagoon is used to maximize the oxygen content in the leachate, further stimulating the biological activity of the wastewater and reducing contaminants. The final treatment will be through a horizontal flow wetland bed for biological and chemical reduction of contaminants.

Actual Treatment Results:

Not available as not yet operational

Total Project Cost:

  • $2,000,000 (approximately)
